Muslim community of Athens [Ongoing Project]
The Muslim community in Athens has become an increasing force throughout the last decade, due to the radical increase of economic immigrants from the Middle East, Africa and Asia in Greece. The state does little to help them adapt to the new environment, while religious liberties are suppressed forcing them to practice Islam in privately owned underground mosques, often found in basements of apartment blocks in various areas of the Greek capital. They protest at times during their major feasts by organizing outdoor prayers in central spots of Athens.
